Primary's Sustainability Initiative
Our comprehensive sustainability initiative, explained.
Dear Friends,
As co-founders of Primary and as parents ourselves, we are deeply committed to sustainability and our collective stewardship of the planet. From the fabrics we source, to the manufacturing partners we choose, to the packaging of our products, we’ve consistently raised our standards and are excited to share all our progress over the last eight years with you. Because it isn’t just about the clothing we make for babies and kids, it’s about the planet they’ll inherit from us.
We are committed to quality that lasts.
It's important to us to create thoughtfully thoughtfully curated, timeless styles that can be passed down again and again. We test every product thoroughly to ensure that they wash and wear better than anything else in your kid’s closet.
We pre-wash all our fabrics to make them extra soft, and to prevent shrinking, pilling, and crocking when you wear and wash them (FYI, crocking is a technical term for when color rubs off onto other dry surfaces). We also use high quality dyes, and rigorously test them to make sure our colors don't fade and stay bright and vivid through multiple washes.
We are committed to sustainable fabrics.
All of our 100% organic cotton styles are GOTS certified, which guarantees that garments are produced cleanly and ethically, and that sustainability practices are followed at every point in the supply chain. Our non-cotton styles, such as UPF 50+ swim and active, are made from 100% responsibly sourced, recycled materials.
Our organic cotton is GOTS certified by Ecocert Greenlife (license 271747 with EGL271747). GOTS stands for “Global Organic Textiles Standard” and GOTS certification is considered the highest standard in the world for organic textiles. GOTS considers every input in the product lifecycle, ensuring full traceability and accountability every step of the way - validating not only the quality of the end product, but also accounting for the environmental impact of every facility and the health, safety, and wellbeing of everyone who works there. Ecocert Greenlife (EGL) is our certifier and 271747 is Primary’s unique ID. Visit GOTS to learn more.
We are committed to eco-friendly packaging.
January 2021 marked the beginning of our transition to sustainable, plastic-free packaging. Our previous plastic shipping bags have been replaced by 100% compostable shipping envelopes, and the hangtags on our clothes are now made of recycled materials. Where we do use individual plastic bags, they are fully compostable. Our new gift wrap bags are also made with recycled materials, ready to be reused again and again. Even our mailers and catalogs are now printed on compostable paper! We're proud and excited to see this initiative that we've been working on for years come to fruition, and be fully instituted across our business.
We are committed to keep going.
We will continue to pursue better, smarter options for our customers and our planet everyday, updating this page as necessary to share them with you. If you have specific questions regarding our initiatives, please email sustainability@primary.com.
In this together,
