Instructions
For the Sun:
1) Draw a sun shape (a circle with some triangles coming off of it) with pencil on a large piece of cardboard. The diameter of my sun was about 15 inches, for my 2-year old.
2) Use an exacto knife or scissors to cut out the sun shape.
3) Lay the cardboard sun onto a large piece of yellow felt and place some poly-fil (I used old pillow filling) between the felt and the cardboard. Wrap the felt around the sun shape using hot glue. I cut out a second sun shape as well to layer behind the sun.
4) Cut thin strips of the felt for straps. Adjust the length to match your kiddo. You'll want the strips to be long enough to go from their shoulders to about their hips, crossing in the back.
5) Attach the felt strips to the top of the sun with hot glue. They should be a distance so that they are at your child's shoulders with plenty of space in between for your child's head.
6) Attach velcro strips to the end of each strap, and another on the costume where you'll want the strips to stick. This just makes the costume easier to take on / off. It helps to have your child close by to make sure the length and placement are just right.
7) Hot glue the second sun shape on the back of your costume, putting it so the "spiky" parts of the sun are alternating with the costume. This adds some dimension, but it's totally optional!
For the Moon:
1) Draw a circle with pencil onto a large piece of cardboard. The diameter on mine (for my six year old) was about 18 inches.
2) Use an exacto knife or scissors to cut out the circle shape.
3) Lay the cardboard circle onto a large piece of blue felt and place some poly-fil (I used old pillow filling) between the felt and the cardboard.
4) Wrap the felt around the cardboard using slits to make it easier. Use hot glue to attach the felt to the cardboard.
5) Cut thin strips of the felt for straps. Adjust the length to match your kiddo. You'll want the strips to be long enough to go from their shoulders to about their hips, crossing in the back.
6) Attach the felt strips to the top of the moon with hot glue. They should be a distance so that they are at your child's shoulders with plenty of space in between for your child's head.
7) Attach velcro strips to the end of each strap, and another on the costume where you'll want the strips to stick. This just makes the costume easier to take on / off. It helps to have your child close by to make sure the length and placement are just right. 8) Spray paint the moon with gray spray paint. You want to make it look like it has craters, some more deep than others, so vary how closely you spray, and spray in some spots more than others! Make sure you let the paint dry overnight before you put the costume on your child.
For the Earth:
1) Draw a circle with pencil onto a large piece of cardboard. The diameter on mine (for my six year old) was about 18 inches.
2) Use an exacto knife or scissors to cut out the circle shape.
3) Lay the cardboard circle onto a large piece of green felt and place some poly-fil (I used old pillow filling) between the felt and the cardboard.
6) Attach the felt strips to the top of the Earth with hot glue.
8) Add green felt accents to make it look more realistic! I just referenced a photo from the internet. Attach these with hot glue.
