Easy DIY: Mixed-Media Wall Hanging Craft

Spring is here, and our warm weather assortment has us feeling inspired! To highlight one of our favorite color combinations, Cantaloupe & Lavender we partnered with our friend @4plusmama to put together this easy, colorful DIY! Unleash your creativity with this exciting mixed media collage project that's perfect for kids. Using simple materials and fun techniques, you can make a keepsake collage to adorn your walls. 

Materials:

  • White cardstock
  • Paint (in your favourite colours)
  • Paint brushes
  • Optional: Recycled mark making tools (such as cardboard, corks, and bubble wrap)
  • Aluminium foil
  • Washable felt tip pens
  • Water (in a sprayer)
  • Scissors
  • Glue
  • Cardboard (for mounting)
  • Twine
  • Optional: Cookie cutter, lids, cups (for tracing shapes)

 

Step 1: Gather all the materials listed above to get started.

Step 2: Choose your favourite colours – we'll be using shades of orange and purple – and start painting on the white cardstock. Experiment with different mark making tools for added texture. You can use recycled items like cardboard, corks, and bubble wrap to create interesting patterns.

Step 3: Explore foil printing by using washable felt tip pens to draw designs on the foil. Spray a fine mist of water over the drawing and press another piece of card stock on top to transfer the colours, creating a unique watercolour effect.

Step 4: Allow your artwork to dry completely before moving on to the next step.

Step 5: Once the paint and foil prints are dry, use scissors to cut out various shapes like petals, circles, flowers, stripes, and dots from the decorated cardstock.

Step 6: Layer the cut-out shapes to create vibrant collage flowers. Mix and match different shapes and colours to design your own unique floral arrangements.

Step 7: Use a piece of recycled cardboard as a base for your collage. Arrange the collage flowers and additional details like dots and stripes on the cardboard, and glue them in place.

Step 8: Attach a piece of twine to the top of your cardboard backing to create a loop for hanging your collage wall art.
