Fabric Feature: The New and Improved Raincoat!

Have you ever wondered what makes Primary’s raincoat so special? 

You may already know that it's made of 100% recycled, waterproof fabric that's lightweight, sustainable, and layer-friendly. But to help us dive deeper into its unique design features, we asked Ryan (our Director of Corporate Social Responsibility, Product Safety and QA) and Ally (our Senior Design Director), what exactly makes our raincoat so special. From the super smooth, lightweight material to the snap closures, they let us in on all the best parts of this rainy-day favorite.

What makes Primary’s raincoat unique, and how does it compare to others on the market?

The waterproof performance of our raincoat fabric goes way beyond industry standards. Generally, the market uses fabric that can withstand hydrostatic pressure up to 5,000 mmH2O. Ours is above 10,000.

Hydrostatic pressure refers to the pressure that any fluid in a confined space exerts. If fluid is in a container, there will be some pressure on the wall of that container.

Why does our raincoat have snap buttons instead of a zipper?

While developing the raincoat, we collected feedback directly from parents and heard from them that kids find snaps way more manageable to close and open.

What went into choosing the fabric for our raincoat?

We considered both sustainability and quality. Our raincoat fabric is a non-toxic, polyurethane-coated polyester, which is made from 100% recycled materials. And as mentioned, the waterproof performance of the raincoat fabric is superb!

Is this jacket more waterproof than our lightweight puffer jacket?

It is! This is because of the top polyurethane coating, which makes it especially waterproof. 

What’s the difference between a lined raincoat and an unlined raincoat, and why did we choose unlined?

Our polyurethane-coated fabric has a polyester backing that serves the same functionality as a fabric lining. We also didn’t want to add any extra weight to the coat by adding an additional liner.

Is there anything else about the design you’d like to share?

We really wanted our raincoat to be season-less, or what we call “365.” For this reason, the fit of the coat was designed so you can layer a zip hoodie underneath for colder days but still go hoodie-free once the weather gets warmer.
