4 Ways Families Are Observing Juneteenth
How friends in the Primary community are celebrating, learning, and reflecting this weekend.
Happy Juneteenth! It’s the newest federal holiday added since Martin Luther King Jr. Day in 1983, initiated by President Joe Biden last year when he signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act. Learn more about the history of Juneteenth, and read on to hear about how three families from our community are spending their day:
Jessica Pierre (@jjoh158):
"We have plans this year at our new military post to attend a big Juneteenth cookout by the lake. We are even calling the event the "Juneteenth Family Reunion" because (especially for military families who are always moving and usually living far from home) we wanted to focus on the black community here on base getting together. Even though we may be meeting other military families in our community for the first time and making new friends, we are all like family already."
I’m also checking out these Juneteenth books that look pretty good for elementary-aged kids!”

"Juneteenth means a lot to our family and culture. To celebrate, we inspire and educate people in our community about Juneteenth and its history. We have a street festival with music, dancing, poetry, food and vendors providing services.

"Juneteenth is here and this year we are so excited to read new books of representation. Last year our favorites included Little Legends and Little Leaders by Vashti Harrison about exceptional men and women in black history. It’s a great way for the kids to honor and hear success stories on people of color and how they are capable of doing great things. Perfectly Martha (Martha Speaks) by Susan Meddaugh is a very good book on not judging someone by what they look like or seem to be, but getting to know them for who they are and how to be a good friend. This year we are excited to read Sulwe by Lupita Nyong'o, spend time with family, enjoy a barbecue, and listen to music together."

"Juneteenth is symbolic of the freedom African Americans gained from slavery. It represents the resilience it took to survive despite their circumstances. It’s a time to celebrate their power, brilliance, and tenacity.
It is so important in our family that my daughters understand the significance of Juneteenth and why it is important to celebrate this specific day of liberty. To celebrate, my family always participates in the local Juneteenth Festivals. We also read to learn as much as we can of our history. There are a ton of kid-friendly Juneteenth books available, with one of our favorites being Juneteenth for Mazie.
A day of liberty is always a cause for celebration!”
